Test your Beat Speed Ratio Sensitivity

Many tuners like the Contiguous Major Thirds (CM3) method of setting F3,A3,C#4,F4 and A4, because they say it is very accurate.

However, it can be inaccurate if you have trouble hearing the beat speeds, and/or have trouble hearing very small differences in beat speeds.

Take this test and see how good you could be at setting the CM3.

    I just discovered a cool way for a tuner to better hear beat speeds. If one is having trouble try slowing the beats down to half speed. “How,” you ask? Use a simple program like Audacity to quickly record your intervals e.i. F3-A3, A3-C#4, C#4-F4, F4-A4. After the quick 5-10 second recording of those four Major thirds go to the menu tabs and click on Effect>Change Speed. Change the speed to -50%. When you playback the audio you will hear the same four Major thirds an octave lower (F2-A2, so on). You will also hear the beat speeds at half speed which might be easier to hear than at full speed. Hearing a difference between 3, 4, 5, 6 beats per second (half speed audio playback) is easier than hearing a difference between 6, 8, 10, 12 beats per second (full speed audio playback).
    If you have a smartphone you can easily use the “Slow-Motion” option in the Camera app to slow down your recorded audio to half speed.

    • Cool. But the beat speed differences remain the same and my research into beat speed difference sensitivity implies beat speed differences at faster beats speeds (12bps) are easier to hear.

      Try the beat speed difference test. At 5bps I can get down to 2-3%. At 12bps, I can get down to 1%-2%. Weird, I know.
