Afternoon Session: 1pm to 5pm

This is the perfect workshop for you if you want to improve your aural tunings. We will talk about different aural tuning methods, but the focus will be on fine tuning your ear so that you can hear beats more clearly.

Whatever method you use to aurally tune a piano, the result will be better if you can hear the beat speeds more clearly; you will be able to make better judgements when comparing beat speeds if you can hear them more clearly.

We will use techniques and technology to help hear where the beats are, and exactly what they sound like. If you know where they are and what they sound like, its like giving your ear a mug shot and saying, “Now, go out and find this guy.”

Since doing my own research on beat speeds and doing these exercise myself, I have noticed an improvement in my tunings. I’m convinced that this is the number one obstacle to producing high quality aural tunings.

We will briefly discuss different aural tuning topics but I would like to spend the majority of our time tuning and getting feedback and measurements on what and we are tuning.

Schedule of Topics:
Thursday – How to use technology to hear and measure beat speeds. (Audacity, Ocenaudio, Spreadsheets, etc)

Friday – Beat Speed Windows. How to set a beat speed between two others, for improved accuracy and precision.

Saturday – Double String Unison technique. Learn how this method can improve your accuracy, precision, and efficiency.
