Toronto Course

August 25 – 29th, 2014

Learn how to tune and repair pianos in this hands-on instructional course.

The Basic Tuning course will start at the very beginning and show you step by step how to tune a piano by ear; where to put the mutes, what notes to tune in what order, and what to listen for.

It will also teach you the tricks needed to make tuning a piano as easy as possible. Tuning can be a very stressful and difficult skill to learn, but it doesn’t have to be. With this course you will learn what to listen for when tuning, how to make fine adjustments, how to keep the pitch stable, etc.

It will not teach you how to repair pianos that break while you are tuning them or are broken when you find them. For that you will need to take the Basic Piano Repair course.

In the Basic Repair Course, you will learn how to perform many of the basic piano repairs that you will need to service most pianos. These repairs include:

-Replacing broken strings, hammers, and keys.
-Regulating or adjusting the keys on uprights and grands so they work optimally and respond accurately.
-Repair pianos so they will stay in tune.
-Fixing sticky hammers and keys.

We will also touch on informal topics as we go.
Some examples are:
-Evaluating old pianos.
-Working as a technician.
-Life and career as a tuner.
-Career opportunities.
-Professional development.

The tuning classes will run from 8am to 12noon. The repair classes will run from 1pm to 5pm.
There is a maximum of six students per class, so if you are interested, make sure you register early.

The classes are designed to give someone the basic skills needed to jump start them on the way to a new career. As such, they are priced accordingly.

The course is also designed to be the most economical option for people who cannot commit the time and money asked for by other formal schools.

Finally, the course is also the least expensive option for students who wish to find out if the have what it takes to be a piano tuner, from a live working piano technician.
