BAND PASS FILTER (BPF) – An electronic device to help people tune and learn to tune pianos by ear.
A band pass filter is a filter that attenuates, or filters, frequencies above and below preset levels.

When tuning pianos by ear, an aural piano tuner’s ear and brain actually filter out unwanted frequency and noise depending on which frequencies the tuner focuses on. It is a miracle of the human brain that we are capable of learning how to do this.

But it takes time. Years of practice result in actual changes to the brain which produce this incredible skill.

Thanks to technology, there are electronic circuits that can do the same thing. The power of a device like the BPF is that, not only does it allow you to hear the beats you need to hear in order to tune a piano by ear, but it also shows you what the beats sound like; what your ear should be able to hear without the BPF, when you ear is trained.

Think of it like a blueprint for your ear. “This is what you are trying to hear, now go do it”.
