Hammer Mating

Most piano notes have three strings. When the hammer hits the strings, it is supposed to hit each string at exactly the same time. If it does not, the strings are said to not be mated.

Strings that are not mated to the hammer can produced a whinny sound that is sometimes mistaken for out-of-tuneness.

In order to get the cleanest sound, the hammers need to be mated to the strings.
