How to Tune Pianos

The Hobby, Skill, and Career of Piano Tuning

By Mark Cerisano

Fixing False Beats for Clean Unisons

The Mark Cerisano Tuning System has a very clear procedure for tuning unisons and pure intervals.

If you can not get a unison or interval (that you want pure) to sound pure, first ask yourself, "Is it the piano?". One of the main reasons why the piano will not allow you to tune a unison or interval pure is False Beats.

False beats are beats heard in a single string. Single strings are supposed to be clean and free from any beats, but if you find a string that beats, watch this lesson.

This video describes how to determine where the false beat is coming from and how to fix it.

Do NOT attempt to fix a false beat if you can't determine the source of the problem.

If you find the source and you try the fix and it doesn't work, do NOT do it more.

If you find the source and you try the fix and it doesn't work enough, do NOT do it more.

These fixes can do more damage if they are used in the wrong place or too much.
