How to Tune Pianos

The Hobby, Skill, and Career of Piano Tuning

It’s doesn’t matter what you call it – Cracking the Unison, Shimming the Unison, or Double String Unison – it’s AMAZING!

How Does It Work?

Many technicians tune by listening to the interval as they tune one interval note.

With DSU, you can’t do that!

What!? How Are You Supposed to Tune the Interval If You Don’t Listen To It?

Easy. We use test intervals to set the beat speeds so that the interval agrees with a given beat speed criteria.

For example, if the criteria says “Tune a pure 4:2”, we just listen to the M3 and the M10 and make them beat at the same speed.

No, No, No! You can’t get good sounding intervals, especially octaves, by filtering out one partial. You need to listen to the whole sound!

No, you can’t get good sounding intervals by setting beat speeds using bad beat speed criteria!

You see, since tuners started using beat speed tests and check notes to check interval sizes, the beat speed criteria we have been using has worked for some pianos, but not all – some octaves sound best as a pure 4:2, and some don’t!

We need criteria that works all the time. That’s what the Bisecting Beat Speed Windows Temperament Sequence and Stretch Procedure provide.

Also, tuning and listening to the whole sound produces intervals sizes that have a large range. Some techs describe the octave as being “slippery”. That is, there is a large range of sizes where techs say that the octave sounds “good enough”.

This error can be multiplied into the bass and treble and that can result in inaccurate stretch which makes the piano sound dead.

Precision and Accuracy.

Precision – the repeatability of a measurement.

“To tune precise pitches, we need to use test intervals.”

Most of the time, when trying to tune a pure 4:2 by ear, for example, we can use the M3/M10 test to prove it is not a pure 4:2. This proves that using beat speeds is more precise, or repeatable, than tuning by listening to the wholel sound.

But what about accuracy – the correctness of a pitch?

“To tune accurate pitches, we need accurate beat speed criteria.”

With DSU we are able to change the pitch of a single string, and hear it change, by as little as 0.3 cents.

Listening to a single string or an interval, doesn’t even come close to that level of sensitivity.

Therefore, when tuning single strings, we are doomed to search for the correct pitch – back and forth, back and forth.

It doesn’t have to be that way!

DSU, test intervals, and accurate beat speed criteria allow us to test pitches, know which way to go to produce accurate pitches, and effect the tiniest of pitch changes to produce the desired pitch change in one direction at a time – no back and forth.

With this course, you will revolutionize your tuning by being able to use these skills:

  • Hear Tiny Pitch Changes
Make pitch changes by as small as 0.3 cents, and actually hear it!
  • Know In Which Direction to Move the Pitch and By How Much
Make less movements of the pin. Get to the target pitch quicker!
  • Beat Matching
Get to the target pitch with one hammer movement!
  • Easiest Open Unison Technique Ever!
Don’t you hate trying to insert your rubber mute into the tiny space between two strings of the same note? No more with DSU!
  • The “No Mute” Procedure
BICHORDS ARE ALREADY DSU’s! No mutes needed! Faster tunings!
