Lesson 7 - What Next?

Before I give you my suggestions for what you could do next to learn more about this subject, I just want to repeat some important facts I have already stated:

1. Hard blows are the easiest way to confirm a stable string.

2. They are also the most dangerous.

3. You do NOT need to use hard blows to tune a stable string. You just need to understand how stability works.

The stability part of this free course was meant to give you an introduction to how to tune stable strings without using hard blows. Some people call this a Soft Blow technique.

The reason why people choose the use the hard blow technique is because they don't realize all the benefits to learning a soft blow technique, and also because they are scared off from using soft blow because of all the theory involved.

I started tuning pianos when I was around 35 years old in the year 2000.

During that time I was also teaching music in public school. I have since discovered that I have a condition where I can't hear speech in loud environments but at the time I thought it might be hearing loss, so I had my ears tested. In fact, I had my ears testing twice over a span of eight years, from 2004 to 2012, all the while tuning pianos. I quit teaching to tune pianos full-time in 2006. During that time I always used a soft blow tuning technique.

Below are the results:

There are two things you can notice from these graphs.

1) In 2004, I had hearing loss at about 6000 Hz in my right ear. (This was probably due to sitting to the left of the drums all during High School Jazz Band.)

2) There is absolutely no hearing loss at all after eight years of tuning pianos full-time.

I encourage you to study soft blow tuning more. It will save your ears and joints and help you make more money!

So Now What?
