The Best Way to Mute the Piano for Tuning
FREE LESSON
Muting the piano is basically the very first thing you do before tuning it, besides opening up the piano, of course.
Knowing what to do and what tools to use will make your job easier.
However, it is not easy to find specific instructions on how to mute the piano for tuning.
Muting strings when using an ETD is fairly straight forward. Mute off strings so that only one string is vibrating. Tune it so the lights stop or the needle is as close to zero as possible. Remove the mutes and tune the unison. Repeat for the next note.
When tuning aurally (by ear) muting a piano has a few more challenges.
If you want to learn how to tune a piano by ear, this free lesson will help you.
Below you will find a link to Chapter 2 of my Basic Piano Tuning Manual and a few videos I have used to help people understand how to mute the piano for tuning.
