How to Tune Pianos

The Hobby, Skill, and Career of Piano Tuning

Partials Hearing Test

To tune a piano by ear you need to be able to hear ALL the frequencies produced by a piano string, not just the lowest one.

When a piano string is played, it produces multiple simultaneous frequencies above the lowest frequency, sometimes called the fundamental frequency.

When an interval is played, there will be a note produced that belongs to both interval notes. Often there will be beating, or a pulsation of volume, heard at that note.

To tune a piano by ear, you do not have a choice. You MUST be able to hear these frequencies.

This test will help you train your ear and also test your ear's ability to hear these frequencies.

If you can not hear these frequencies, you can not tune a piano. You may think you can, but anybody who can hear those frequncoes, and there are a lot of us, will be able to tell that you can not hear them, and that is why you think your tuning is good, when it isn't.

Take the test and start your training now.
