This video explains the logic behind the "Interval Crime" method of refining a traditional temperament.
Compared to the Mark Cerisano Tuning System (previously Go A.P.E.) it is very slow and frustrating. The 2nd half of the video explains the power of the Mark Cerisano Tuning System refinement procedure.
Important Take-Aways from this Video:
1) The traditional shot gun approach (solving a crime) of checking dozens of intervals to fix a problem is very inefficient and very difficult due to the enormous amount of tests you have to memorize. It creates frustration and makes tuning not fun. DO NOT USE THIS SYSTEM! Learn the Mark Cerisano Tuning System (Formerly the Go A.P.E. System.)
2) Since producing this video, we have discovered the power of auditory illusion.
Auditory Illusion is "Hearing what you want to hear."
"If something is close but wrong and you want to hear it right, you will hear it right, and it will NOT get fixed."
"If something is close but wrong and you want to hear it WRONG, you WILL hear it wrong, and it WILL get fixed."
When we first tune a note so that it creates a slow-medium-fast progression in its window, the beat rates may be close but wrong. But we are trying to set the beat speeds right, so that is what we will hear.
But, when we are trying to refine, or correct intervals that we hear are wrong, we will check the notes only one way, not the crazy shot gun way as with the traditional refinement procedures. We just check each note the way it was originally tuned.
All the notes in the temperament were tuned with beat rates so that they possess a certain relationship like slow-medium-fast.
When trying to fix a problem, we will check each problem note only one way, the way it was originally tuned, hoping that the note is WRONG; hoping that it is "slow-slow-fast" ot "slow-fast-fast!" - whichever progression gives us permission to fix the problem - we do NOT want to hear "slow-medium-fast"!
Get it? If it's close but wrong, we WILL hear it! And it WILL get fixed! Whereas when we first tuned the note and it was wrong, we didn't hear it because we weren't looking for it to be wrong, we were looking for it to be right, and our ear told us what we wanted to hear!
That's the power of the Mark Cerisano Tuniung System - very fast and efficient.
