Exercise – Tuning the Lower Skeleton – Level 1

  • In this test, the coincidental partials are filtered, so they are easy to hear.
  • You will also see a graphical representation of where the A3C#4 is relative to F3A3 and C#4F4. (Scroll down)
  • The beating occurs two octaves above the top note of a M3. Use the [Filtered] and [Unfiltered] buttons to train your ear so that you can easily hear the beating partial within the unfiltered interval.
  • Tune C#4 so that each of the three intervals beats as SLOW - MEDIUM - FAST.
  • In a real tuning, you might not end up with SLOW-MEDIUM-FAST, it may work out to be MEDIUM-MEDIUM-MEDIUM, or even FAST-MEDIUM-SLOW. However, if each pair changes speed by the same degree, or ratio, then C#4 will be accurate.
  • Each time C#4 is changed, an unfiltered A3C#4 will play at the new speed.
  • How to Get Better Results - Your ear can not be trusted when asking it to tune progressive beat rates. If the beat rates are close to being progressive, but are not, your ear will tell you they are. This is known as Auditory Illusion. Trick your ear by telling it to hear two of the beat rates as the same speed. If you can hear two beat rates the same speed that means they are not progressive. Fix it until you can't tell if two beat rates are the same speed.
  • The progression of levels are thus:
Level 1 - a graphical representation that makes getting 100% super easy. Just watch the graphical representation and change C#4 until A3-C#4 is in the middle between F3-A3 and C#4-F4.
Level 2 - Level 1 with filtered beat rates but no graphical representation.
Level 3 - No filtered beat rates. Only partially filtered beat rates.
Level 4 - No filtered beat rates
In levels 1-4, when you click [Score], you get feedback on how close you are, but C#4 doesn't start over. That means you can "chase" the correct C#4 - just keep changing it, getting closer until you get 100%. This is cheating. In level 4b, every time you click [Score], C#4 is set to a new random C#4. You have to get 100% on your first try to pass.

Tune C#4 so that A3C#4 is exactly halfway between
F3A3 and C#4F4, like this:

F3A3------A3C#4-----C#4F4
