What is Stretch and Why is it so Important?

Piano strings are imperfect. They produce higher frequencies that are not in tune with the lowest or fundamental frequency. These higher frequencies are usually sharp.

But these higher frequencies are produced when we play intervals like octaves. To sound good, the higher notes have to be tuned higher then we would think so that the notes are in tune with the higher frequencies.

This results in a tuning where the treble is higher than expected and the bass is flatter than expected.

But how can we know what stretch is best for each piano?
