PIANO TUNING TEMPERAMENT
ANALYSIS AND SCORING

These are usually free scorings generated by a recording of M3's and P4's submitted to me by one of my subscribers, but this particular tuning was taken of someone's YouTune channel. Read the story below.

Tuned by: Rafael Melo

The Story of this Tuning
About four years ago I started a thread on pianoworld.com about the accuracy of ETD tunings.
Rafael Melo (Gadzar) challenged me to a contest; he would tune his piano only using his ETD, making the lights stop, and I would tune by ear and we would see who was the better tuner, me or the ETD. We never did manage to have that contest.
Recently I discovered that Gadzar posted one of his tunings online. You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEwY8Lg6tXQ
It starts with a example of an aural tuning and then tunes it using the ETD, making the wheel stop, and then plays the M3 and P4, which I was able to record, filter, and measure.

Analysis
Read "Insights" below

Traditional
Many of the P4 sounded horrible. Some easily indicated one note was off. For example, the slow F#3B3 and fast B3E4 easily indicates a low B3.
The M3's were harder to tell. If any, the G3B3 could have been heard as slow which confirms the B3 low.

Go A.P.E.
The Go A.P.E. System uses P4 as well as M3 to find errors. This temperament would have been very easy to find errors. However, there were so many that it might have made it difficult. The system usually produces a temperament with no audible errors or only a very few, whch make correcting very easy. If I had a temperament like this after using the system, I would have thought something very wrong had happened and I would have started over from the very beginning.

Having someone who adamantly raves about ETDs, tune a temperament and put it on the internet to prove how good the ETD is at producing accurate tunings is exactly the kind of thing we need to be able to objectively analyze whther these ETDs actually do as good a job as the manufacturers and other people claim they do.

They obviously still have a long way to go, and technology being as advanced as it is, if they haven't been able to do it yet, they probably never will be able to produce a better tuning than a trained ear.

HOW TO USE THE GRAPHS AND AUDIO TO IMPROVE YOUR EAR

1. Listen to the recordings while looking at the graphs.

2. Listen to the filtered recordings and try to confirm aurally that the beat speeds are following what the graph says.

This improves your "Beat Speed Difference Sensitivity" - Your ability to hear small differences in beat speeds.

3. Listen to the unfiltered recordings and try to hear the specific beating partial within the unfiltered recording.

This improves your "Tuner's Ear" - Your ability to filter frequencies at will.

GRADING OF THE TEMPERAMENT

This temperament has been marked with the new marking system. The old system used levels. The new system uses a formula. The result is that tunings that are close to the limit lose less marks and tunings that are way off lose more marks. See graph.

INSIGHTS
You must understand interval sizes in the following courses:
Equal Temperament, and Wide, Narrow, and Pure Intervals,
in order to follow the logic explained in the analysis above.

Traditional Refinement Procedure (Obsolete)
In refining a temperament, we identify two or more problems that suggest the same note may be too high or too low, and then change that note to fix multiple problems.

This reiterative method helps us improve the temperament bit by bit.

This is why it is imperative that, if you want to improve your aural tuning, you must improve your beat speed recognition.

Exercises like these can help greatly.

You are encouraged to read the analysis and confirm aurally that you can hear the findings, and understand how the improvements suggested would improve the beat speed progressions.

In this way, you will improve your ability to rationalize the logic, and improve your ear to be able to hear smaller and smaller beat speed differences.

Improving these skills will greatly improve your temperament.

IMPORTANT

Traditional refinement procedures require you to finish the temperament before you can have any insight.

They also require you to test multiple intervals before you get any valuable information. 🙄

The Go A.P.E. Sequence allows you to self correct before you are finished.

Also, because of the incredible accuracy in the Go A.P.E method, you fix notes the way they were tuned. (No searching high and low for reasons why a note is wrong)
