How to Tune Pianos

The Hobby, Skill, and Career of Piano Tuning

The Most Important Piano Tuning Skill and You Were Probably Born With It!

Piano tuners listen to intervals.

Because of equal temperament, we have to tune these intervals so they are beating out-of-tune. (This is counter-intuitive. Research the topic of equal temperament to learn more.)

When an interval is out-of-tune, it sets up a pulsation of volume called a beat speed.

We often have to tune or check that these interval beat speeds are faster or slower than their neighbours.

These intervals need to speed up or slow down by 6%.

So, in order to tune a piano to a high level, we need to be able to hear beat speed differences of at least 3% or lower.

I created a test that proves: Most of Us Are Born With This Skill!

Take the test yourself and find out if you were born to tune pianos!
